(sight size). < Back American Schoolgirl Needlework First Floor - Entrance Hall Other Decorative Arts Silk-on-Linen, framed and glazed; 17 ¼” h. x 12 ¼” w. (sight size). Within a flower and vine border, a complex polychrome design of flowers, trees, bird, butterflies, and cat, around a 20-line verse entitled, Christ the Rose of Sharon. Needlework signature and dated in brown LC: Hannah Stuniken/ December 20, 1794. Some age toning of the linen ground, otherwise condition and color are good. Note: Although Stuniken is a German or Austrian name, the Biblical verse in English suggests the maker of this work as American. More research should be done. Previous Next

White pine; 16 ¼" h. x 44 ¼" w. x 15 ½" d. The six-board blanket chest has dovetailed corners, a base molding, and iron strap hinges attaching to top with cleats at each end. Interior with a lidless till on right side. The iron handles are 20th c. replacements, as is the lock. Chest has been stripped of its original paint and refinished with a clear coating inside and out. Previous Next

The Mather Homestead property originally consisted of 100 acres in 1778, which is what it took for a family to sustain itself. By 1906, when Stephen Tyng Mather acquired the property, it consisted of 22 acres. Courting Mirror: With a deeply molded walnut frame, outset corners and central pediment with églomisé floral spray panel against a white ground. Looking Glass: Featuring a walnut-veneered scalloped crest and base; glass bordered by ogee-molded crossbanding. The crest has a slot for a finial or cartouche, now missing. Previous Next

Mahogany, mirrored glass; pine; 31 ½" h. x 18" w. An ornately scalloped mahogany-veneered crest with gilded phoenix bird in the pierced center; and ornately scalloped base.
