On a bookshelf at the far end of the Keeping Room is a hardcover copy of Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a Darien resident, and the wife of aviator Charles Lindbergh.
Tucked in the pages of the book is a two-page handwritten note from Anne Lindbergh to Stephen Mather’s daughter, Bertha Mather McPherson. In its entirety it reads…

Dear Mrs. McPherson,
I have meant to let you know before this of our discussion on your suggestion about Anne’s “Coming Out.” We have talked over the possibility—my husband, Anne, and I—and we seem to have come to the decision not to participate in the Coming Out Cotillion. In certain ways, I am sorry that Anne will miss a chance to share some good times and social life with the group she was a part of earlier and whom she—and her mother—enjoyed so much.
However, she seems to be quite certain of what she wants to do and will probably be involved with preparation for College next Fall which will keep her busy and interested. I do want to thank you for telephoning me and for your kindness in letting me know about it, and in thinking of us in connection with it. It was very nice to have a chance to talk to you and hear your news.

Anne Spencer Lindbergh (1940-1993) was seventeen at the time her mother’s letter was written. She attended Radcliffe College for three years and then left to study in France. An author of children’s books, she died in Thetford Center, Vermont on December 10, 1993.
